Joel Simpson Bio
JOEL SIMPSON has been photographing since he was a teenager in the 1960s. Since then he's pursued careers in college teaching (Ph. D., Brown, 1976) in English, French, Italian and jazz history, jazz piano, and music software production (
Dick Hyman’s Century of Jazz Piano CD-ROM, 1999). His photographic art work has shown in eight New York area galleries, two in Texas, and one each in Massachusetts, Colorado and Seattle, and has been published in View Magazine (Brussels),and the Center for Fine Art Photography’s
Artist Showcase (distributed in
Camera Arts). From 2003 to 2010 he wrote for
M: The New York Art World, and he has been the New York correspondent for ArtsHub.com. He curated a large photography show at the Williamsburg Art and Historical Center (Brooklyn, NY) entitled
Sun-Pictures to Mega-Pixels: Archaic Processes to Alternative Realities, in 2007 (www.wahcenter.net) featuring 125 photographers. Since then he has shown at the Chapelle-Ste-Anne in Tours, France, the Musée de l'érotisme de Paris (October 2008–March 2009), the Safe-T-Gallery in Dumbo, Brooklyn,White Box in SoHo, Photo L.A, and twice at the HP Garcia Gallery, 580 Eighth Ave. (at 38th Street) in Manhattan, where he will have a solo show in June of 2012. He is also represented in Istanbul by Galeri Baraz.
The Australian fine art photography magazine
Silvershotz published a 12-page article on Simpson's virtual sculpture in December, 2011, and this work and his virtual hyper-garments will appear in
Focus Nudes 21, coming out in March, 2012.
